Upon arrival, I noticed they were not attached to a string. Each light was separate and came with three mini batteries. You need to remove a rubber ring from the outside, unscrew the bottom and remove the plastic surrounding the three batteries found on the inside. The light turns on when you screw it back together. I chose the purple color and I am so glad I did! It's beautiful!
What I really enjoy is the endless possibilities these give me when it comes to crafting. My daughter and I love to make Halloween and Christmas decorations and I can't think of a better aspect to incorporate into our projects. Especially since they have so many colors to choose from - like red, yellow, green and more.

Update: After a couple days, all of the bulbs stopped working. The connection in each one was faulty. I switched batteries and to no avail. The connections were obviously faulty because when you shake each one, the purple light flickers, but never stays on.
